The Mama Bird Doula Alliance
Bringing Birth Equity To Aurora, Colorado
The Mama Bird Doula Alliance (MBDA), which was created by Dr. Kenya Mitchell and Marpessa Allen, unites Mama Bird Maternity and Wellness, Adam’s Purpose, Stride Clinic, Soul to Soul Sisters, and Colorado Access with the goal of improving Black maternal outcomes by providing free full-spectrum doula care to low-income Black families. During the course of this two-year pilot project, forty Black birthing families will be paired with doulas who will provide one-on-one and group support throughout the prenatal, labor, and postpartum periods.

Our Story
In 2020, Dr. Mitchell began The Mother Mortality Project when her Medium article, “I almost died from preeclampsia. I wasn’t tested because I’m Black,” went viral. When women responded to the article with their stories, Dr. Mitchell qualitatively analyzed select narratives to examine obstetric abuse and develop solutions to support birthing people. The findings and recommendations from that investigation serve as the framework for the Mama Bird Doula Alliance's community-based approach.
